Results show clear rise in support for Barisan, says Muhyiddin

TRONOH: The result of the Manek Urai by-election is not a disappointment because it shows the clear rise in support for Barisan Nasional, said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

He said Barisan managed to reduce the majority because they lost to PAS by only 65 votes this time compared to more than 1,200 votes in the previous election.

“To me, this is a sign that a wind of change is blowing strongly over there (in Manek Urai). But unfortunately, we were not able to garner enough votes to win,” he said after the 52nd national Al-Quran recitation competition at the Universiti Teknologi Petronas in Seri Iskandar here yesterday.

Muhyiddin congratulated PAS on their achievement but was thankful that Barisan lost by a small margin.

“The people now understand the value of the leadership under Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and the various steps taken by the Government to bring development to the country,” he said.

“We will wait for the results of the post-mortem because we want to see our weaknesses and learn from them. We want to see where we can improve,” Muhyiddin said.

Asked whether the results of the by-election showed that the people in Manek Urai were against the politics of the development brought on by Barisan, he said: “I do not believe that all of them do not want development.”

“I can feel their wants but in this democratic system, it is the majority who will win,” he said, adding that the majority did not want what Barisan offered.

“Therefore, we cannot give them what we promised to deliver as they did not elect us,” Muhyiddin added
