Naib Presiden Pas, Mohd.

Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan (left) and Khairy Jamaluddin

ELECTIONS are generally decided by the middle ground — although admittedly without a strong base, one will not reach the middle.

My faith in the Malay middle ground is probably more pronounced than the faith most Malay politicians have in them.
With the influx of 7.9 million new voters, as a result of lowering the voting age to 18 years old and automatic registration, as well as the current marriage of convenience between Umno and Pas, “doomsayers” are predicting that Pakatan Harapan will lose the 15th General Election.

But then again, you know what they say about “doomsayers” — the world has yet to end, the sun is still shining brightly, and we still have faith in humanity.
Allow me to make a prediction: as long as Pakatan Harapan stays intact, the coalition will be a two-term government, at least. Or, to be more precise, as long as Pakatan remains a cohesive group, it will be the winning side in GE15.
If, however, Pakatan is to break up anytime now, that’s a different story.
NAJIB FACTOR
Let us first examine what happened in GE14. I have always reminded friends and supporters of Pakatan Harapan that we must humbly accept the fact we did not win the 2018 election on our strength alone. It was former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, who lost it for Barisan Nasional (BN).
GE14 was a vote against Najib and Rosmah across the states. The anger among the Malay middle ground against them was so intense that anyone near them was deemed to be guilty by association.
Pakatan Harapan benefited from the anti-Najib sentiment to win all the swing seats that mattered in the west coast of the peninsula. However, the side effect of this factor was that whatever Pas gained in the east coast came through the same anti-Najib dynamic.
Hundreds of thousands of west coast-based Malay voters returned to Kelantan and Terengganu to vote for the Islamist party.
I have openly called those in Umno who persuaded Pas’ top leaders to deviate from the original Pakatan formula in 2015 “fools”. Not very polite, I know. But thanks to these Umno leaders, BN lost GE14 due to the Najib factor.
They thought they were smart. Their primary objective was to protect Najib with a three-pronged strategy so that Najib didn’t have to resign under internal pressure.
FIRST, they had to get rid of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim so that there would be no alternative prime minister candidate to challenge Najib.
Anwar was imprisoned in February 2015.
SECOND, they lured Pas to leave Pakatan by convincing the Islamists to contest in three-cornered fights. They believed Pas could steal anti-BN Malay votes from Pakatan Harapan to ensure BN’s victory by default.
THIRD, they launched an all-out campaign of “Semua Salah DAP” (a strategy to blame it all on DAP) to spark racial sentiment against DAP for the woes of the country. They had glossed over Najib’s mismanagement of the government. They hoped no Malay voters would vote for Pakatan Harapan.
Yet Najib’s grand strategy didn’t work. Why? In GE14, Pakatan had its three-pronged tactic: the grand realignment of the three original Pakatan parties with Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia, the appointment of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as PM candidate, and the use of the PKR symbol as the common logo.
Ultimately, the fundamental point is simple: the Malay middle ground is no fool. They saw through the corruption and economic malaise caused by Najib and they hated the pompous presence of his wife.
The consensus was that whoever associated with Najib shall be defeated.
UMNO-PAS ALLIANCE
But let’s take a breather for a moment. A year after GE14, there are still those who support Najib. His campaign of “Bossku” is popular among certain segments of the Malays. Why is it so?
Let’s not forget that BN still received 35 per cent of national votes in the last general election. They are still hardcore supporters who believe in Najib’s innocence.
However, Najib’s re-emergence only consolidated his own base but will most likely be counter-productive to winning the middle ground.
With Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Najib — both facing trials for corruption — back at the top leadership of Umno and BN, it will be an advantage to Pakatan Harapan.
However, it won’t be good for the nation because these two desperate leaders are known to resort to racial and religious “exclusionary” politics.
With Zahid and Najib, Umno has just ceded the middle ground to Pakatan Harapan.
If the opposition is led by slightly more moderate Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan and Khairy Jamaluddin, they can give Pakatan a run for the money in the coming GE.
At least there will be a genuine competition for policies to win the Malay middle ground.
What about the Pas-Umno alliance? Pas lost its chance to occupy the middle ground in the 2004 general election, and again in 2015 with the exodus of progressive leaders to form Parti Amanah Negara.
A Pas-Umno alliance that is formed on the basis of racial supremacy and exclusive religious politics will alienate not only voters in Sabah and Sarawak as well as the non-Malay voting population, but also the Malay middle ground voters.
The middle ground across ethnic lines want better jobs, better pay, better living standards and security. They also want a more efficient, caring and clean government that works for them, and not take them for a ride to benefit cronies.

Proton milik asing, bukan kereta nasional

KUALA LUMPUR, July 18 — PKR vice-president Zuraida Kamaruddin admitted today to factionalism within her party and said it was up to president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to bring the rival groups together.
A brewing sex scandal has led to public bickering between senior party leaders that effectively confirmed previous suspicions that the largest ruling party is divided into factions.
Twenty-three PKR central committee members and four of the party’s federal lawmakers issued a rare public rebuke of Anwar this morning for suggesting his deputy, Datuk Seri Azmin Ali, should resign if sex videos implicating the latter are genuine.
“Yes, there is,” the PKR vice president said when asked if there was a rift within her party.
“Of course, the perception and the media is blowing it up but I think, yes, it is happening, but to me it is an opportunity to consolidate and seal the cracks and move on.”
Zuraida was among the signatories of the joint statement criticising Anwar for making remarks that further divided PKR.
She said it was time that PKR cleaned house and put its efforts into discovering those responsible for the sex videos.
Anwar also needed to step up and perform his duties as president, she said.
“It’s time for the party to unite and Anwar has to lead. The fact we made the statement and he accepted it is great and I hope something good will come of it,” she added.
After Anwar’s suggestion yesterday, Azmin responded angrily by telling the PKR president to “look in the mirror”.
Earlier today, Anwar said Azmin may have responded without seeing the context in which the suggestion was made, but conceded that he should not have made them to begin with.
When asked if Anwar should explain why his political secretary was among those arrested for allegedly distributing the videos, Zuraida said it was not her place to comment.
“But it is a bit strange that his aide was remanded by the police.”

KUALA LUMPUR, July 19 — Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim should relinquish his presidency of PKR and retire from politics, a founding member of the party Khalid Jaafar said.
Khalid, who is also adviser to PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Azmin Ali, reminded Anwar of the dangers of living in a glass house and throwing stones at imaginary targets, amid a clear schism within the party over a sex video scandal that the police have concluded to be a smear tactic against the Cabinet member.
“In the run-up to GE14, he was portrayed as the seventh prime minister. After GE14, Anwar is certain to be the eighth prime minister as there is apparently an agreement. Only an inch from the prime minister’s seat.
Only an inch left but Anwar is impatient. He worries someone else will overtake him. He throws a stone at his rival. He does not realise he lives in a glass house,” Khalid wrote on his Facebook page yesterday.
“At an advanced age, the return journey is long. It’s best Anwar Ibrahim retires from politics,” he added.
Khalid’s strongly-worded post is the latest open rebuke from senior PKR members, 23 of whom are members of the ruling Pakatan Harapan (PH) component party’s central committee, after Anwar suggested his deputy should resign as minister if the sex videos in which Azmin is alleged to be a participant prove to be authentic.
In a joint statement yesterday, the group led by PKR vice-presidents Zuraida Kamaruddin, Chua Tian Chang and Ali Biju chided Anwar for making inappropriate public comments against Azmin when the allegation had yet to be proven.

Late yesterday, Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Abdul Hamid Bador announced that the sex videos that first emerged in May were authentic, but added that the identities of the two men could not be verified.
However, Hamid added that police investigations revealed the videos were the creation of a political party leader who spent hundreds of thousands of ringgit to embarrass and tarnish the reputation of a certain individual, without naming either parties.
“It revives the saga of the China doll video that was nearly forgotten. The then inspector-general of police said forensic investigations showed the video was genuine,” Khalid wrote on Facebook, referring to the 2011 sex scandal that surrounded Anwar then.
The executive director of think tank Institute for Policy Research noted that Anwar’s latest remark on Azmin echoed the call by his party information chief Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Md Akin.
He noted their remarks departed from the full support Azmin and the rest of the PKR leadership gave Anwar when their leader faced similar sex allegations that he categorically denied.
Anwar who is addicted to the prime minister’s chair has once again committed a tactical blunder by repeating Shamsul’s call.
“The information chief’s call means precisely that Anwar must let go presidency of Keadilan,” Khalid said.
Azmin has consistently denied involvement in the sex videos in which he was alleged to be a participant by Shamsul Iskandar’s former ministerial aide Haziq Abdullah Abdul Aziz who was also the Santubong PKR Youth chief and sacked from the party earlier this month.
Police have arrested nine people in connection with the sex videos to date, the latest including Anwar’s political secretary Farhash Wafa Salvador Rizal Mubarak.
Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said Wednesday that he considered the real crime in the scandal to be the conspiracy to “bring down Azmin.”

IGP: 'Evil conspiracy' behind sex video scandal led by a political party leader

KUALA LUMPUR: Investigations into the sex video scandal revealed that there is an evil conspiracy led by a political party leader to humiliate and damage the reputation of an individual, says Datuk Seri Abdul Hamid Bador.
The Inspector-General of Police said the video, which was spread to cause unrest among the public, was produced by parties paid hundreds of thousands of ringgit.
He also said that there is a high probability that the viral sex video implicating Economics Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Azmin Ali is genuine.
He, however, said that CyberSecurity Malaysia could not identify those in the video through facial recognition.

"It is a high probability that the video is genuine, but facial recognition came back negative. It could not link those in the video with any individual," he said in a statement on Thursday (July 18).
Abdul Hamid is clarifying a statement he made earlier regarding the video during an interview.
In an interview with RTM's Bicara Politikonomi on Wednesday (July 17) night, Abdul Hamid said CyberSecurity Malaysia has confirmed that the sex video is authentic.
However, the agency could not identify the two men engaging in sexual relations.
The police have so far remanded nine people, including Farhash Wafa Salvador Rizal Mubarak, who is the Perak PKR state chief and political secretary of PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Over the past month, clips of a sex video featuring two men were circulated to media personnel and PKR members.
This was followed by a confession video by Haziq Abdullah Abdul Aziz, a PKR member and former political aide to Deputy Primary Industries Minister Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Md Akin, that he was one of the two men in the video.

- UTUSAN ONLINE

[getting hotter and hotter...plan backfire?..] ...Sacked PKR man starts 'anyone but Anwar' campaign

[getting hotter and hotter...plan backfire?..]  ...Sacked PKR man starts 'anyone but Anwar' campaign

P.Ganapathy meeting with the media after being sack from the party at NU Sentral today.

KUALA LUMPUR: Sacked Seputeh PKR branch chief P. Ganapathy has kicked off an Asalkan Bukan Anwar Ibrahim (anyone but Anwar Ibrahim) initiative, saying the party president was not fit to be a prime minister.
Ganapathy alleged that Anwar practised divisive politics, nepotism and cronyism.
"A reformist would not play divisive politics to remain in power. If he can divide the party, he can divide the nation," he said.
Ganapathy said he was sacked from the party for criticising its leadership in a WhatsApp group consisting of Anwar and all branch leaders.

"I never said anything against the party. My comments were targeted at the individual helming the party.
"Now that they have sacked me, I am free to express my views openly," he told a press conference here on Friday (July 19).
Ganapathy said that PKR did well in the 14th General Election (GE14) in May last year "while Anwar was still in jail", adding that cracks only appeared internally after the party leader was freed after being granted a royal pardon.
Anwar had been jailed over a sodomy charge that PKR stalwarts claimed was politically motivated.
Ganapathy also accused Anwar of practising nepotism cronyism in the party elections late last year.
"He appointed some of those who had lost in the party elections as supreme council members.
"He chose people who were rejected by the grassroots as long as they supported him. What kind of reformation is that?" he said, alluding to PKR's reformasi battlecry.
Ganapathy also claimed that Anwar had sidelined Datuk Seri Azmin Ali, now the Economic Affairs Minister and PKR deputy president, despite the latter having been with him "through thick and thin for 30 years, long before PKR was formed".
The two leaders have had a go at each other over sex videos that implicate Azmin in a homosexual affair, which he has categorically denied.
Earlier this week, Anwar said that Azmin should resign if it is proven conclusively that he is one of the two men in the video.
Azmin fired back, saying "Tell him he must look at the man in the mirror."
Meanwhile, Ganapathy said he is a lifetime member who has been with the party since its inception in 1998.
"I even went bald to pray for Anwar's freedom when he was imprisoned.
"If Anwar has no qualms sacking a member like me, who has dedicated time and resources to the party without demanding any post in return, imagine how he would treat the rakyat?" he alleged.
Ganapathy said he would seek his lawyer's advice before going on a roadshow to raise awareness on his "Anyone But Anwar Ibrahim" campaign.

[someone must be very happy ...! ] ... Anwar-Azmin tiff, says Ku Li

Anwar-Azmin tiff, says Ku Li

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (right) and Datuk Seri Azmin Ali

KUALA LUMPUR: There is a possibility that the Pakatan Harapan coalition will self-implode, following the internal squabble involving two top PKR leaders – Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Datuk Seri Azmin Ali, says Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.
However, this would depend on whether Azmin or Anwar commanded more support from lawmakers to be the next prime minister, said the Umno veteran.
“Possible. But it depends on the numbers again, whether Anwar and Azmin have the numbers,” he said to reporters when met at the parliament lobby on Thursday (July 18).
Speculations were rife that Azmin was targeted in the viral sex video in an attempt to undermine the Economic Affairs Minister’s chances of becoming the next prime minister.
On February, Anwar said he expected to be prime minister in no more than two years’ time.
The Gua Musang MP said he doubted Anwar’s claims that he had adequate support from MPs in taking over from Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as the nation's eighth premier.
“Well, it’s up to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to determine whether a person has the command of the majority of the House.
“You can say I have the number, but it’s up to the Agong to determine whether a person has got the majority,” he said.
At the same time, Tengku Razaleigh said there seemed to be a split in PKR, based on social media developments.
“That has yet to be confirmed. We don’t know what goes on in somebody else’s party.
"We cannot just rely on social media news. But let’s hope for stability,” he said.
Tengku Razaleigh said Dr Mahathir, as the current Prime Minister, probably had better knowledge on the internal developments involving Anwar and Azmin.
“Well, he is the big chief you know. So, I’m sure he knows which way things are going,” he said.

Fahmi Fadzil: SD of Anwar alleging he has two-thirds support of all MPs is fake

Fahmi Fadzil: SD of Anwar alleging he has two-thirds support of all MPs is fake

PETALING JAYA: A statutory declaration (SD) purportedly by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim alleging he has two-thirds support of all the Dewan Rakyat to replace Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad as prime minister is fake, says Fahmi Fadzil.
The PKR communications chief, who is also the Lembah Pantai MP, said that the commissioner of oaths who allegedly signed the SD has also said it was a fake document.
"I believe that the SD was maliciously fabricated by those who wish to take advantage of the situation for their narrow political ends," said Fahmi.
He said the message, circulated among Pakatan Harapan members, was accompanied by news reports about the SD, which is dated July 1, 2019.
The SD alleged that Anwar, as PKR president, had managed to garner two-thirds support of the MPs in the Dewan Rakyat to replace Dr Mahathir.
It further said that Anwar would now seek advice from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong for the transition of power.
"I also agree that if the transfer of power does happen, I will appoint Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as deputy prime minister to replace Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail," the SD allegedly stated.
Dr Wan Azizah, who is also Anwar's wife, is currently the Deputy Prime Minister and Muhyiddin is the Home Minister and also the Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia president.
Dr Mahathir has repeatedly said Anwar would be taking over from him as prime minister, but has not set a definite time frame when it will happen.
In recent days, there has been some mudslinging taking place between Anwar and PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Azmin Ali.
Anwar had called upon Azmin to resign if he was positively identified as one of two men in a viral sex video and Azmin retaliated by saying Anwar should "look into the mirror" instead.
Dr Mahathir, meanwhile, had said that the sex video is a political scheme to stop someone succeeding in politics.
Nine people, including Anwar's political secretary Farhash Wafa Salvador Rizal Mubarak, are currently in remand over the viral sex video.
Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Abdul Hamid Bador said on July 19 that a leader of a political party had spent hundreds of thousands of ringgit on the video as part of an "evil conspiracy".
He also said that the video had been verified as genuine by CyberSecurity Malaysia, but the identities of the two men in the video could not be determined.

PETALING JAYA: CyberSecurity Malaysia has confirmed that the sex video implicating Economic Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Azmin Ali is authentic, says Datuk Seri Abdul Hamid Bador.
The Inspector-General of Police, however, said the agency could not identify the two men in the footage.
"The video and who are those in it are not within my jurisdiction. So we sent it to CyberSecurity to determine if the video is authentic and if CyberSecurity could ascertain who are in it.
"The answer we received ... they (CyberSecurity) said 'authentic' (tulen) but they cannot be 100% certain who are in it," he told RTM's Bicara Politikonomi on Wednesday (July 17) night.

"I hope the people will understand the constraints that I am facing in my responsibilities as the IGP.

"As I said before, this is a difficult case that cannot be resolved in one, two, or even three weeks," he said.
Previously, Abdul Hamid had said that police are exploring all angles in the investigation.
"Due to the complexity of the case, we are thoroughly investigating it.
"We cannot rush the investigation. Allow us to properly investigate the matter," he had said.
When asked on the authenticity of the video at an event in Wisma Pertahanan on Thursday (July 18), the IGP said he would issue a statement on the matter later.

Video lucah: Proses pengecaman wajah negatif - KPN
