PERLIS MUFTI: Swearing on Quran is wrong, unnecessary

KANGAR,

Perlis Mufti Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin said today sumpah laknat” (swearing in the face of divine retribution) while holding the Quran was a wrong belief and unnecessary.

However, the oath itself, which Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, 23, took to demonstrate he was telling the truth in accusing Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) advisor Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim of sodomising him, was in accordance with Islamic principles, he told Bernama.

Several quarters including PAS Spiritual Leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat had expressed disapproval over the taking of the oath with a Quran, saying it was emulating the practice of Christians who swore on the Bible.

Mohd Saiful Bukhari had taken the oath last Friday at the Federal Territory Mosque in Kuala Lumpur under wide media coverage.

Asked whether it was necessary for Mohd Saiful Bukhari to repeat the oath, Dr Mohd Asri said that was unnecessary.

Anwar pleaded not guilty on Aug 7 to a charge of having sodomised Mohd Saiful Bukhari on June 26. The case comes up for mention on Sept 10.

kzso - the truth will prevail
