A rubber tapper from Terengganu was today sentenced to one year jail and fined RM5,500 after the Sessions Court found him guilty of three charges, including causing injury to a policeman and journalist during the Bersih 3.0 rally for electoral reforms last year.
Sessions court judge Mahmud Abdullah made the decision after finding that the prosecution had raised a reasonable doubt on Mohd Safuan Mamat@Nordin, 26, at the end of the defence case.
Mohd Safuan has to serve the one-year jail sentence simultaneously for all the three charges beginning today, and another six months if he failed to pay the fine.
Mahmud allowed the application by Mohd Safuan's counsel Dr Zulqarnain Lukman for a deferment of the sentence on condition that the bond was raised from RM1,500 to RM9,000.
However, he rejected Mohd Safuan's request to pay the fine in instalments and ordered him to pay the whole amount today.
On the first charge of damaging a Royal Malaysia Police vehicle using a cone while taking part in a demonstration at Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman at 3.50pm on April 28, 2012, Mohd Safuan was sentenced to a year's jail and fined RM3,000.
He was jailed for three months and fined RM2,000 on the second charge of using violence by causing injury to Constabel Mohamad Kamil Paiman at the same location, time and date.
On the third charge, he was jailed one month and fined RM500 for causing injury to Al-Hijrah TV station journalist Mohd Azri Mohd Salleh, 29, also at the same place, time and date.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Haffiza Jemali appeared for the prosecution
