EC rubbishes Khairy’s phantom voters claim

By Syed Jaymal Zahiid

PERMATANG PASIR, Aug 24 – Elections Commission chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Yusof today rubbished claims made by Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin that PAS has planted some 3,000 phantom voters here.

He also revealed that Umno had only highlighted 14 names and not 3,000 as claimed by the Umno Youth chief.

He said after a thorough investigation, there was no basis to Khairy’s claims, saying that those accused of being phantom voters were actually locals who had registered prior to the Electoral Act Amendment in 2002.

Under the new Act, voters registering from 2002 onwards will have their names registered according to their identification cards whereas those registering prior to the amendment need not do so.

Khairy claimed that there were many Malay voters who were registered with different addresses, in particular Chinese-dominated areas, and claimed that they were phantom voters planted by PAS.

Abdul Aziz, however, said these voters are those who registered prior to the amendment so the addresses as listed on the Permatang Pasir electoral roll might not reflect their true addresses.

The EC chairman also shrugged off claims made by Khairy that there are “agents” in the electoral authority acting on behalf of Pakatan Rakyat.

“Show me the names, their details. I am interested in finding out as well but so far, no names have been given,” said Abdul Aziz.

He added that the EC has conducted thorough filtering to ensure that the Permatang Pasir vote would be a transparent one.

“We take months to prepare this, not just one or two days,” said Abdul Aziz.
