UNSPIN: PKR Sec-Gen call Khalid Ibrahim a corporate crook

Extract from an article entitled by Adviser: What lies beneath by Syed Nadzri of New Straits Times today below:

The latest backslide for Khalid concerns the Selangor government's decision to buy over debts owed by Talam Corporation to state agencies to the tune of RM392 million.

It prompted a stinging rebuke from Salehuddin who was so upset that he used words like "crooks" and "old tricks" in his admonition.

The debt transfer move led the Selangor State Assembly to approve an additional budget of RM392 million last week to enable the Menteri Besar Incorporated to take over the collection of repayments of Talam from the three subsidiaries of the state, namely Kumpulan Darul Ehsan Bhd, Permodalan Negeri Selangor Bhd and Yayasan Pendidikan Selangor.

Salehuddin, it is learnt, was outraged with the manner it was done. In an email circulated to all PKR elected representatives in Selangor a few days ago, he was sharp and stinging.

"We must get Khalid to answer," he fired. "What was the party's input in the scheme? Why was this matter never officially brought up to Biro Pol (political bureau)?

"Was this matter ever discussed in detail with PKR state exco? This is an old trick used by the crooks in the corporate sector. Are we using them as consultants?"

Party insiders say the outburst was yet another by Salehuddin who is said to be fed up with the way things are being run by certain people in the party.

The next line in the email points further to the fact that he is on the brink: "Have we totally forgotten our promise to the rakyat? Or is it politics as usual for us who promised change and yet perpetuate old tricks?

"I am embarrassed even for this matter to have seen the light of day. Either we are totally ignorant or we don't care!"

Adviser: What lies beneath

By Syed Nazri

SELANGOR Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim is in "deep fry". Otherwise, why would the state need to appoint Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as economic adviser? And why are so many people angry with Khalid -- even key people in his own Parti Keadilan Rakyat such as secretary-general Datuk Salehuddin Hashim?

Anwar himself had to admit it loudly at the Selangor PKR delegates convention on Sunday that Khalid was no match for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak who is bent on seeing Barisan Nasional wrest the rich state back.

Such was the rebuke from Salehuddin who, prior to this, was rumoured to have resigned several times already.

But, despite some insiders saying that he was now appearing less often at party functions and even at party headquarters, the political strategist and former corporate turnaround specialist was still officially PKR secretary-general.

The hot news late last month that he had indeed resigned turned out to be another hoax.

"Not true," he replied then after I had asked him in a text message why he had quit.

"I'll let you know if it's true."

"But I heard you are really fed up and have come out with a strongly worded letter," I wrote back.

"In a manner of speaking yes," came the reply.

Anwar's appointment as economic adviser to the Selangor government, therefore, may have a lot less to do with gimmicks that go with a RM1 monthly salary than with disgruntlement in the ranks.

And it has shown up quite glaringly that the hard part for the Pakatan Rakyat state governments, barely halfway through the electoral term, is to administer.

For Khalid, especially, a lot, it is said, has to do with the way he runs the country's most developed state too much his own way.

Some say he is doing it like the corporate captain he once was.

The menteri besar's constant run-ins with critics and controversies arising from public statements described as "not being thought through properly" also contributed to the shortcomings.

Khalid has been wading through quite a minefield so far, as chief executive of the state, getting all sorts of flak over some of his public views that rubbed some people the wrong way.

Some people see Anwar's appointment as an appeasement rather than a move to drastically turn fortunes around in Selangor.

This, they say, is given the fact that Anwar's credentials, even when he was Malaysia's finance minister, a decade ago were not that impressive.

"But at least he knows how to lean back on the tried and tested statement about the fundamentals being strong," said one insider.
