KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 1 — Speculation is rife that the PAS leadership is set to punish and pillory leaders identified as liabilities to its commitment to Pakatan Rakyat (PR), including the party’s Selangor chief Datuk Dr Hasan Ali.

It is understood that the party’s disciplinary committee have already identified leaders alleged to have caused strain and soured the party’s relations with allies PKR and DAP.

Among the evidence of such wrongdoing is an audio recording of some leaders badmouthing the alliance in a meeting with several bloggers, including an Umno blogger.

The Malaysian Insider understands that although the party’s disciplinary committee headed by Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man only met yesterday and is yet to call anyone to testify, it is already confirmed that action will be taken against recalcitrant members.

Party insiders claimed among those lined-up for the axe is Hasan, who PAS spiritual leader Datuk Seri Nik Aziz Nik Mat has named as one of the “problematic” leaders that must be ousted in order to preserve PAS’ commitment to PR.

It is also learnt that some leaders from the youth wing, including the state youth chief and staunch Hasan supporter, Hasbullah Mohd Rizwan, will be part of the casualty list.

“We don’t know what the action would be but they will be punished and Hasan is definitely one of them,” a top level leader told The Malaysian Insider today.

PAS insiders say Hasan’s punishment will serve as a damage control to the potential harm that may arise should Nik Aziz insist that leaders liable to PR’s federal agenda be cleansed from the party.

Hasan, who is a state executive councillor with the Selangor government, has been named along with PAS deputy president Nasharuddin Mat Isa and secretary-general Datuk Mustafa Alias as those who had made the party look inconsistent.

Nik Aziz had called for a special assembly to vote these leaders out but a compromise was reached when the top leaders decided to discard the idea and instead probe the problems in Selangor, in a meeting last Wednesday.

Meanwhile, party disciplinary committee chairman Tuan Ibrahim said letters have been sent to those identified and they will have 14 days to reply.

He also did not deny or confirm that Hasan was among those identified for questioning, saying it was too early to make statements as the matter was still being probed.
