Are Hadi supporters safe?

Are Hadi supporters safe?

The prediction by the opposition leader, Anwar Ibrahim that UMNO will fall soon after the 12th General Election, is off tangent. However, it is Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) which he leads that is now embroiled in crisis. One after another of its leaders left the party and some resign from their posts. Some have lost confidence in Anwar for several reasons, including his moral issue.

How about Pas? The party is also in the abyss of breaking up. The prayer by certain leaders in Pas that UMNO be destroyed, seem to fall on the party itself. UMNO continue to stand. Even the Malay support towards UMNO is getting bigger by the day, a reflection of renewed confidence in the leadership of Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

The call by Pas spiritual leader Nik Aziz Nik Mat for a special General Assembly be held to weed out certain leaders for supporting party President, Hadi Awang, exposed the extend of turmoil in the party. The call by the Tok Guru was however rejected by Pas Supreme Council meeting, and to be replaced by a seminar, a move seen as a slap on the face of the respected politician cum religious teacher. What transpired during the meeting has been leaked out and became talk of the town. Real hot. There are leaders who threatened to step down. The meeting failed to find any solution and instead made the situation worst and confusing.

Does this mean that the leaders whom Nik Aziz wanted to be kicked out are safe? Among them are Deputy President, Nasharudin Mohd Isa, Secretary-General, Mustafa Ali and Selangor Pas Commissioner, Dr Hassan Ali. Awang does not feel that their position remain status quo as supporters of Nik Aziz will not stop at that. Speculation that Pas is split in the middle seems obvious enough. One group supports Hadi and they supported the idea by the party President to form a unity government with UMNO. Among the leaders on Hadi’s side, other than Nasharudin, Mustafa and Hassan, are Harun Taib, Haron Din, Azizan Razak, Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man and Nasrudin Hassan Tantawi.

The other group supports Nik Aziz, who are more incline to the aspiration of PKR and DAP. But their presence in the political pact appears to be less dominant. Among the Nik Aziz’s loyalists are Husam Musa, Kamaruddin Jaafar, Mahfuz Omar and Hatta Ramli. This group is also said to be pro-Anwar or what is known as the Erdogan group. They are sympathetic to Anwar and willing to stand by him despite the moral issue surrounding him.

With the preemptive act by Nik Aziz in attacking some pro-Hadi leaders, he appears to be strengthening the Erdogan group. Awang sees this as a response by Nik Aziz after several of his right hand men were defeated in the last party election, including Musa who was defeated by Nasharudin.

Linking and putting the blame on UMNO is a strategy put up by those behind the Nik Aziz’s group. UMNO has been made the scapegoat by the Erdogan group which is aiming at taking over Pas.

Hadi seems to display his maturity by not responding to the group’s humiliation. He appears to be calm and has not reacted. But it is a big mistake for anyone to under estimate him. Don’t forget he is still the President.
