Ezam, Anwar and the tales of a bygone leader?

Ezam, Anwar and the tales of a bygone leader?

There is this friend who gave a video collection of speeches of the former Youth Chief of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), Ezam Mohd Nor, entitled “Hakikat Sebuah Keputusan” (Facts of a decision).

Issues raised in the speeches are not really new but when put in a series it become interesting. Awang is drawn to the content of the speeches, which touches on the integrity and moral issues of the key leader of the PKR, Anwar Ibrahim.

Ezam among others exposed the ploy, lies and betrayal of Anwar in many matters including the sodomy case involving his former assistant Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan. He also touched on his reason for leaving PKR.

“In God’s name, I left Anwar because of my principle as a Muslim who do not allow me to make him as my leader. Between Islam and Anwar, I choose Islam,” he said.

The Anwar issue is now the focus. It is not only about the accusation of sodomy but also his political future.

Anwar’s action in delaying the court case brings to the question of whether he is man enough to face the truth and justice? It is rather peculiar for a person claiming to be a fighter and yet suddenly chickening out. Awang believes that Anwar behave the way he does because he felt that this time there is a formidable evidence against him compared with his first sodomy case.

Prior to this, his action has been questionable when he refused to take the “muhabalah” or religious oath at a mosque, as was done by Mohd Saiful. Anwar on the other hand is using his political platform including outside the country to defend himself and as usual alleged that he is victim of a political conspiracy by his opponents.

Besides fighting his court case, Anwar is struggling with putting the position of PKR in order. Many of the PKR leaders and activists left the party. The domestic issues affecting the party are getting serious with cracks occurring in Sabah and Selangor.

Anwar is reported to be a bit jittery at the wavering support of Pas for him including on moral issue and the court case. A random survey by various groups found that the people’s support and that of the Malay NGOs on Anwar is sinking. It is linked to the frustration of the Malays on him who is accused of undermining the Malay institution other than damaging the national foundation and spirit of the constitution, a phenomena unprecedented in history.

At the same time, Ezam, Anuar Shaari, S. Nallakarupan, Lokman Noor Adam and dozens of former PKR leaders who left the party exposed the hypocrisy of Anwar including in the case of corruption and power abused. Even at its infancy, PKR already saw most of its senior leaders jumped ship including Dr Chandra Muaffar, a notable figure in the academic circle.

Pushed to the political corner, Anwar hatched a survival strategy by launching personal attack against the Prime Minister, Mohd Najib Tun Razak. Many see this as his political game in deflecting the attention towards his sodomy case and the storm in PKR.

One of the internal criticisms against him is that he is giving to much face to PKR Vice-President Azmin Ali, so much so that it creates uneasiness to other leaders in the party.

Why the favouritism on Azmin, only Anwar knows the answer.

It’s not just about Azmin’s issue. Many of Anwar’s leadership shortcomings are in the hands of Ezam.

“He knows that I know a lot….” Said Ezam.

The question is, what will happen if Anwar have to languish in jail for the sodomy charge?

If that happen, he will be written in history as a leader with an extreme peculiarities.

Awang sees that his political future is floating in a dark cloud even if he doesn’t need to face the court.

Anwar is actually serving his own sentence.

There are a lot of indicators that come one after another exposing the truth of the whole episode.

The environment and the people’s state of awareness are no longer on his side.

He may have laid out the best plan to escape from his self-created conflict but Allah’s plan against him is unsurpassed.

Anwar should know and Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, his wife who is also President of PKR, must have known better.

There may be some deficiencies that Wan Azizah knows but which she finds it difficult to crack except to camouflage it under her alluring smile.
