Nasharuddin says he is not problematic, backs Pakatan

By Asrul Hadi Abdullah Sani

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 29 — Nasharuddin Mat Isa denied today that he was a problematic leader and said the fact that he was elected by an overwhelming majority as PAS deputy president showed otherwise.

In his first comment since Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat had named him as among "problematic" leaders who were not fully committed to Pakatan Rakyat (PR), the PAS No. 2 also pledged his party's full commitment towards the opposition coalition.

Nik Aziz, the PAS spiritual leader, had last week called for a special muktamar to rid the party of leaders whom he described as “problematic” and seen to favour working closely with Umno instead of strengthening PR.

He had named Selangor PAS commissioner Datuk Dr Hasan Ali along with Nasharuddin and secretary-general Datuk Mustafa Alias as those who had made the party look inconsistent.

Nasharuddin (picture) said today that he was surprised that he was named by Nik Aziz because it is common practice for top leaders to just give advice to its members.

“The way we work in PAS, especially the top leaders and him as the spiritual leader will give us advice. And he always warns us on some issues and so on. It so happened that on this particular issue, the advice from him came from a blog.

"But when he explained what he meant by his article in that blog, it was discussed and the central committee came up with the conclusion that was reached last night,” he told reporters in Parliament.

Nasharuddin blamed the current problem in PAS on the poor leadership that emerged after the party’s annual general assembly or muktamar in Ipoh and Shah Alam this year.

“As far as for the future political landscape, we are going to be with Pakatan Rakyat. And we are going to strengthen that. And this was proved by many events or programmes organised together and also the continuous meetings we have with top leadership and also leadership at different levels.

“Of course, there are hiccups here and there, but that can be avoided but I think as far as the basic principle is concerned, we are still very much with Pakatan Rakyat,” he said.

He stressed that the party’s position has always been to remain in PR.

“Our position stays as I mentioned earlier that we keep to the resolution from the muktamar, both in Ipoh and Shah Alam, that we are going to stay put in Pakatan, enhance, strengthen Pakatan and the process is ongoing and more programmes are being organised now and details being discussed at different levels,” he said.

He also said the disciplinary committee would present its findings in a report and the next course of action against Selangor PAS will be decided by the party’s central committee.

Central committee members last night unanimously decided not to call for a special muktamar as demanded by Nik Aziz.

Party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang however said the disciplinary committee has been told to investigate various allegations directed at Selangor PAS.

Khalid Samad welcomes investigation into Selangor PAS

By Asrul Hadi Abdullah Sani

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 29 — Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad welcomed the decision made by the PAS central committee to investigate various allegations made against Selangor PAS.

Central committee members last night unanimously decided not to call for a special muktamar as demanded by spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat.

Party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, however, said the disciplinary committee has been told to investigate various allegations directed at Selangor PAS.

Khalid (picture) said the decision is good and shows that the party is serious in tackling its problems.

“It's not being swept under the carpet as what is normally done in the past but this time around it’s being listened to and considered more seriously and this is done by referring the issue to the disciplinary committee,” he told reporters in Parliament today.

He was also not disappointed with the outcome of last night’s meeting and believes that the party has made a very logical decision.

“I think it was a very logical decision because the issues being discussed were being presented for the first time and I think it was very good that they had the meeting because all the facts were put on the table and people who were not in the know are now in the know, and they can give them time to digest the facts and come up with a more well-informed decision.

“The three decisions were made at the meeting, I was informed because I wasn’t there; number one is that there is going to be a seminar and Dr Aziz Bari will come and present a paper with respect to the direction of PAS and PR within PR which is very good,” he said.

The resolutions reached during the meeting were to hold a special seminar on the direction of PAS and Pakatan Rakyat (PR), the party’s disciplinary committee investigation into Selangor PAS and a denial any form of co-operation between Umno and PAS.

“This is something very important because all the work being done through the blogs and some media is attempting to show the issue of co-operation with Umno is still very much alive and the flat denial on the part of the president and the central committee meeting is what was needed to be re-emphasised,” he said.

He was however disappointed that the issue on the definition of PAS's struggles was not discussed.

“Unfortunately there is only one issue which I thought should have been addressed, which was not, that was on whether PAS continues its struggles on the basis of Islam or Malay Islam.

"So that has been an issue which I think the seminar will address and I will do my level best to make sure when the seminar is held, a resolution clearly emphasising that PAS is an Islamic, non-racial party is what we want of the end results,” he said.

He hoped the party’s disciplinary committee would investigate Selangor PAS commissioner Datuk Dr Hasan Ali.

“I think when they said the disciplinary committee will look into Selangor, that’s what it basically means isn’t it? Unless they are referring to me,” he said.

Nik Aziz wanted a special muktamar to rid the party of leaders whom he described as “problematic” and seen to favour working closely with Umno instead of strengthening PR.

He had named Selangor executive councillor Hasan along with PAS deputy president Nasharuddin Mat Isa and secretary-general Datuk Mustafa Alias those who had made the party look inconsistent.

Investigate the complainant too, says Selangor PAS

By Adib Zalkapli

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 29 — Selangor PAS today said it welcomed the decision of the party’s central committee to start a disciplinary investigation against the body but hoped that the complainant will be probed too.

“The Selangor PAS hopes that the party disciplinary committee will also investigate the complainant, and to take firm action if the allegation is found to be untrue as it has caused instability in the party and tarnished the party’s image,” said the Selangor PAS secretary Khairudin Othman in a statement today.

He added that the state leadership will give full co-operation in the investigation.

“All leaders and members of Selangor PAS are willing to be investigated and will co-operate with the party disciplinary committee,” said Khairudin.

“We hope that the investigation be launched immediately to restore the integrity of PAS members in Selangor,” he added.

Khairudin said that the Selangor PAS is happy that the central committee had decided to solve internal problems with a disciplinary investigation instead of calling for a special muktamar.

Earlier today PAS disciplinary committee chairman Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man confirmed that the panel has started investigating the party’s Selangor liaison body, over “statements detrimental to the party.”

Ibrahim, who is also a PAS vice-president, however refused to name the state party leaders who are under investigation.

The decision to start the investigation was made in response to Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat’s call for a special muktamar to oust “problematic leaders”

The PAS spiritual leader had named the Selangor party chief Datuk Dr Hasan Ali as one of the leaders not fully committed to Pakatan Rakyat (PR).

Hasan who is also a Selangor executive councillor, had previously questioned the administration’s move to investigate alleged abuse of power by the state’s civil servants, attempted to ban the sale of beer in Muslim majority area and empowered mosque officials to act as moral police.

His actions rocked the PR-led government and put PAS’s commitment to PR under question.

The central committee’s move to begin the investigation is seen as a compromise to avoid a damaging special muktamar.
