Perak MCA Youth Urges MCA To Consider Leaving BN

IPOH, Sept 6 (Bernama) -- Perak MCA Youth today urged the MCA leadership to consider leaving the Barisan Nasional (BN) if leaders of Umno, the biggest component party of the ruling coalition, refused to change.

Citing the recent statement by Bukit Bendera Umno division chief Datuk Ahmad Ismail, outgoing Perak MCA Youth chief Datuk Tan Chin Meng said the remark had hurt the feelings of the non-Bumiputera and could undermine unity among the people.

"Perak MCA Youth, therefore, is urging MCA leaders to consider leaving the BN if Umno leaders are not willing to change their attitude," he told reporters when met at the St John Ambulance Hall where the Perak MCA Youth's election was taking place.

Tan, who is not defending his post, said the Perak MCA Youth would not set any time frame for Umno leaders to change but stressed that there must be an indication that they were sincere in making the change.

"I'm grateful to the prime minister for voicing out that BN and Umno will be making the change but it seems that leaders at the national and state levels are not following his move," he said.

Tan added that the refusal by the BN leaders to learn from the results of the 12th general election would cause the coalition to be punished more severely in the next general election.

"The BN's dismal performance in the last election was due to the statements made by our leaders, especially from Umno, who touched on sensitive matters and disregarding the feelings of other races," he said.

Yesterday, Gerakan acting president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon said the party would review its position in the BN if the component parties, especially Umno, failed to make changes and restore the people's confidence.

Meanwhile in Kuala Lumpur, MCA Federal Territory chairman Datuk Tan Chai Ho said the call from MCA grassroots members for the party to leave BN need to be looked at carefully.

He said the issue was a delicate matter and must be studied thoroughly, especially on the consequences of such action.

Nevertheless, he said he would bring the matter to the attention of the party's top leadership.

"This issue must be discussed properly and we must consider what are the consequences of the action," he told reporters after opening the FT MCA Youth delegate meeting.

Earlier, outgoing FT MCA Youth chief Hang Chin Pheng, in his speech, said that the MCA wing would pressure MCA top leadership to consider pulling the party out of the ruling coalition if Umno's top brass failed to take appropriate action against Ahmad Ismail.

kzso - now we know who is your friend or enemy (when you are in deep shit or trouble). mca have forgotten that umno stick by them when they're in crisis and having deep problem previously. if mca wants to leave bn, let be it. or are they saying "they have no confidence in pak lah?"
