Parliament dissolution is not the solution - Hanif Omar

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Inspector-General of Police, Tun Hanif Omar said dissolving the Parliament is not the solution amid the nation’s ongoing political turmoil.

The present situation, he said, is not yet a security threat and that a resolution is possible without the dissolution of Parliament.

“There is no need to dissolve. There’s still room (for a resolution). However, there will be implications to national security if the current situation persists,” said Hanif at Istana Negara, here today.

Hanif spoke with reporters after handing over a memorandum to the King’s private secretary, Colonel (R) Datuk Nazim Mohd Alim.

He declined to disclose details of the one-page memorandum, that the latter represents the views of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in a movement to uphold the Constitution.

A group of 50 NGO leaders, including from the Retired Senior Police Officers Association of Malaysia (Respa), were present outside the Palace.

Hanif, along with former IGP Tan Sri Musa Hassan and former President of Dewan Negara, Tan Sri Abu Zahar Ujang were seen entering the grounds of Istana Negara through Gate 3 at 9.48am before exiting the palace 20 minutes later.

When asked about his views of a unity government, Hanif said an opposition is needed to play an effective role of check and balance against the government.
