Saiful in hiding, uncle has faith

Saiful in hiding, uncle has faith

The man who lodged a police report against Anwar Ibrahim - his special aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan - is already undergoing a character trial on the Internet. Further, the most talked about 23-year-old in Malaysia is nowhere to be found.Saiful now stands accused of being part of a conspiracy plot orchestrated by politicians from the Barisan Nasional government to defame or have Anwar jailed once again.

He alleged that the PKR de facto leader sodomised him at a luxury condominium in Damansara.

And at a PKR press conference yesterday - and now all over blogs and the Internet - pictures of Saiful and various BN politicians were distributed.Besides posing with ministers like Shahrir Abdul Samad, Azalina Othman Said and Mustapa Mohamed, Saiful has also taken pictures with Deputy Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's special officer Khairil Anas Yusof.

Najib today denied any involvement with Saiful.

A visit to Saiful's home in Bandar Utama in Petaling Jaya this afternoon showed no signs of people.

However, after several minutes of buzzing the house bell, a man who said he was Saiful's uncle answered the door.

A good kid. According to the uncle, who did not want to give his name, his nephew had gone into hiding and he had not contacted him since news of the report broke out on Saturday.

"But I believe in Saiful," said the twenty-something-year-old at the double-storey house. "He is a good kid and all that he has done, he has done with honesty".

"I just got back from Perak and we've not been in touch but I know why he lodged the report," he added. Teary-eyed, the uncle said that his nephew reported the matter as he wanted to expose the PKR leader for what he was.

When asked about Saiful's alleged links to Umno politicians, the uncle brushed them off."We've got no help or connections with Umno. All he wanted to do is to expose the heinous crime."

Besides his safety, Saiful also stands to lose big if his allegations do not hold water.

At midday today, Anwar's lawyers have filed a defamation suit against the former Uniten dropout. In the suit which was filed at the Kuala Lumpur High Court registry in Jalan Duta, Anwar also claimed that the police report lodged by Saiful was an abuse of the process of law.

Anwar is also in hiding

Meanwhile, Anwar is also in hiding - albeit in a more public and protected enclave - at the Turkish Embassy.Citing unidentified sources who want to harm him, the former deputy prime minister moved into the embassy at 6am yesterday.

This was after Saturday's press conference where Anwar revealed that he had evidence implicating police chief Musa Hassan and attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail of alleged misconduct during his trials in 1998-1999.

PKR officials have postponed their plans to lodge a police report against the duo, a decision probably caused by the present developments.

Anwar is play acting, charges Syed Hamid

KUALA LUMPUR, June 30 —
The government today accused Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim of play acting and dismissed his claims that his life was in danger.

It also said that contrary to claims by the Opposition leader, he was not invited to seek refuge in the Turkish embassy by the country's ambassador to Malaysia. He allegedly sought an appointment with the ambassador yesterday morning and chose to remain on the embassy grounds.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar told reporters in Parliament lobby today: "I guarantee that his life will not be in danger when police carry out their investigation. We have a legal system here and everyone, including Anwar, must respect that."

Syed Hamid said that since Anwar was released from prison in 2004, he has had the freedom to do what he wanted as a political activist, both locally and overseas.

"Nobody has endangered or threatened him. He could move freely making all sorts of statements and allegations.

"We have not taken any action to endanger his life. Why should we do that? His family has done very well in the political arena. This is not a country that stops people from doing what they want to do so long as it is within the law," he said.

Syed Hamid noted that the Turkish embassy has not endorsed Anwar's action to seek refuge at its embassy here and it was now an issue under the jurisdiction of the Foreign Ministry.

"Turkey did not intervene. He went to the Turkish embassy on his own accord. He asked for an appointment, he went to see the ambassador, the ambassador met him and subsequently he did not want to go out.”

Meanwhile, Bernama reports that Foreign Minister Datuk Rais Yatim said Anwar was never invited to the diplomat's home nor had he sought political asylum from the Turkish government.

After meeting Turkish ambassador to Malaysia Barlas Ozener at Wisma Putra today, Rais told reporters that the diplomat had clarified that Anwar was never invited to his house and that the opposition leader had gone there on his own accord.

"The Malaysian government accepts this explanation. Anwar is not at the ambassador's house as an asylum seeker but as a guest. It has just been less than 24 hours. If he stays there for a longer period then we might have to take adifferent stance. The question of political asylum too does not arise," he said.

Report by Mohd Saiful Bukhari bin Azlan

If you believed in the Statutory Declaration ...
From Tivoli to Unit 1151, Kondo Desa DamansaraThe following police report was made on 28 June 2008 at 5.45 PM by Mohd Saiful Bukhari bin Azlan, who turns 23 next week (i/c no 850706-01-5687):

Majikan saya Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim - Ketua Umum PKR."

Logically, people who pooh-poohed RPK's statutory declaration and saw it as a political ploy will pooh-pooh this police report and see unseen hands, too. And vice versa, right?I never believed Anwar was a sodomite, just as I don't believe Rosmah was there at the scene of Altantuya's murder.

My belief, however, makes no difference to the people who believe that Anwar is indeed a sodomite and to the people who have already made up their minds that Najib must be linked to the Mongolian's murder. There are fanatics among us today and we live in difficult times. My advice (to those who aren't yet fanatics) is still the same: let the police investigate the claim. If it goes beyond that, let the courts hear the case. After all, don't we have a more credible judiciary now? A more credible police force? A more courageous civil society movement? A freer and more democratic Press under Prime Minister Badawi.Badawi says his Government has nothing to do with the sodomy police report against DSAI. He says he was shocked. Click here to read his shock. And Anwar says the police report by his private assistant was total fabrication, here.

Malaysia's Anwar to be investigated on sex charges: police

Agence France-Presse

KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia's opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim will be investigated over new allegations of sodomy, police said Saturday, the same charge that saw him jailed a decade ago.

Anwar's Keadilan party said that one of his aides, Saiful Bahari, had been arrested and "forced" to make a statement saying he was sodomized by the opposition leader.

"Yes, we have received a police report from an aide of Anwar Ibrahim that he was sodomized. But no, we will not arrest Anwar at the moment," said deputy police chief Ismail Omar.

"We will investigate this report first. We will look into it and carry out the necessary steps before issuing any warrant of arrest," he told AFP.

Keadilan officials said that Anwar and other top members of the party were holding crisis talks and feared that he could be arrested soon.

The charismatic leader of Malaysia's resurgent opposition was a respected deputy prime minister and finance minister until 1998 when he was sacked and later jailed on sodomy and corruption charges.

He spent six years in jail until the sex charge was overturned, but the corruption conviction kept him out of politics until recently.

In March he led an alliance of opposition parties to unprecedented gains, wresting a third of parliamentary seats and five states from the Barisan Nasional coalition which has ruled for half a century.

Since then he has claimed he has the support of enough government lawmakers to form a new government.
