PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad is reported to be ill with fever and chest pain and resting at home.
News of his ill-health came from an aide who called off Dr Mahathir’s attendance for the launch of the Malaysia Trailblazers Association which was to take place today, according to Star Online.
The report quoted an announcement by MyPerintis founder Laurence Low Kah Guan on the association website.
“Dear friends, I just received a call from Dr Mahathir’s office that he is down with fever, chest pain and coughing. We will need to postpone the launch to a further date. Let’s all pray for Tun’s speedy recovery,” he wrote.
Dr Mahathir, who turned 90 in July, suffered a heart attack in 1989 and underwent surgery for a by-pass operation. He stepped down as prime minister in 2003 after 22 years in office.
He has been a strident critic of both his successors, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Najib Razak, and has successively campaigned against them to leave office.
Over the past year he has been at the forefront of moves to unseat Najib as Umno president and prime minister, and has gone on a speaking tour around the country on national affairs, particularly the management of 1Malaysia Development Bhd. In late August, he made two brief appearances at the Bersih 4 street rally in central Kuala Lumpur which demanded political reforms and Najib’s resignation.
