Muhyiddin wants US, critics to back off from Sedition Act issue
Bernama reported Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as saying that the country had the right to make any decision for the sake of its security and peace, including retaining the act.
He said the decision to retain the act was final and it was needless to review it as there had been detailed discussions and the views of all quarters had been obtained.
"Outsiders need not interfere in this matter," he said after opening the triennial general assembly of the Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party in Bintulu today.
The Malaysian Insider reported yesterday that Biden highlighted Putrajaya's use of the act to stifle opposition, saying it was concerned with the rule of law.
He tweeted: "Amid growing US-Malaysia ties, Malaysian government’s use of legal system & Sedition Act to stifle opposition raises rule of law concerns."
His tweet follows Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's announcement at the recently-concluded Umno general assembly that the act will be maintained, reneging on his promise made two years ago to repeal it.
But, Muhyiddin said Putrajaya never interfered in the internal affairs of other countries and wanted other countries to respect its stand. – December 6, 2014.
