Wan Junaidi: No basis for Latheefa to be grilled by Parliament committee

KUALA LUMPUR: There is no basis for Latheefa Koya to be grilled by the Parliament Special Select Committee on Public Appointments over her appointment as the chief commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), says Datuk Seri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.
According to the Santubong MP, there were no provisions under any law or Standing Order that empowered the particular Parliament Select Committee to summon Latheefa for a hearing.
“This means that the Prime Minister’s appointment (of Latheefa), which was done in accordance with the Constitution, is correct.
“The House has no right to summon Latheefa to appear before the committee,” said Dr Wan Junaidi to reporters during a press conference at the parliament lobby on Thursday (July 4).
He added that he had on numerous occasions pointed out that there was a need for the government to amend current laws and Standing Orders.
“The particular committee must be mentioned in the Standing Orders. The Standing Orders did not mention that.
"You cannot put the cart before a horse. That is why I’m frustrated. I’ve been talking about it for the last year,” he said.
Latheefa is set to appear before the committee on Thursday (July 4), chaired by Selayang MP William Leong.
The 46-year-old is set to be grilled over her political ties as a PKR stalwart, the tenure of her contract and several other issues, Leong told reporters during a press conference in Parliament on Wednesday (July 3).
Latheefa's appointment last month raised the eyebrows of politicians and members of the civil society, who questioned the process of her appointment and her suitability for the position.
