Tony Pua sues Ahmad Zahid and Utusan Melayu – Bernama

Petaling Jaya Utara member of parliament (MP) Tony Pua Kiam Wee has filed a defamation suit against Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Utusan Melayu (Malaysia) Berhad and another party over an article published in the Utusan daily.
Pua named Ahmad Zahid, who was Defence Minister at the time, Utusan Melayu and its group editor-in-chief Datuk Abdul Aziz Ishak as defendants.
The suit was filed at the High Court Registrar's office here through Messrs Thomas Philip on December 9 last year and the media obtained a copy of thestatement of claim while the case was mentioned in chambers today before Senior Assistant Registrar Norliza Hussin.
Utusan Melayu's counsel Choo Shi Jin told reporters that Norliza had fixed February 11 for case management pending the filing of the defence statements.
In his statement of claim, Tony Pua alleged that Ahmad Zahid was responsible for the publishing of the article "Tony Pernah Ditahan di Singapura" (Tony had been arrested in Singapore) and the other defendants had failed to investigate its accuracy before printing it on March 18, 2011.
He further claimed that the article portrayed him as having been arrested by the Singapore police for a criminal offence and he had been charged in court.
Pua, who is also DAP's national publicity secretary, claimed that following the article his reputation and credibility as an MP had been jeopardised and the articles had not been retracted despite a notice to do so which was served on June 17, 2013.
He is seeking an injunction to prevent the defendants from publishing similar libellous statements, general and aggravated damages, interest and cost. – Bernama, Jan
