PAS slams PKR's move to name Anwar as candidate

PETALING JAYA: PAS, which holds 15 seats in Selangor state assembly, has criticised PKR’s move to name Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as candidate for the Kajang state seat by-election.
PAS Dewan Ulama information chief Datuk Dr Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali claimed that the decision to choose Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim as Selangor Mentri Besar was made by PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang.
“Any move to replace Khalid would tantamount to an insult to our party president’s intelligence,” he said in a statement yesterday.
Dr Mohd Khairuddin blamed the latest fiasco on “certain PKR leaders” with personal interests while Khalid was mentri besar.
He also said the party would not intervene as long as “it has nothing to do with the Selangor mentri besar’s job”.
It was reported that PAS wants Selangor PAS chief Iskandar Abdul Samad, who is also a state exco member, to be the new mentri besar if Khalid is removed.
However, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said Anwar’s candidacy was fully backed by the Pakatan Rakyat leadership.
“We in Pakatan will be supporting its candidate because that is how we work,” he said in Komtar yesterday.
Lim said Anwar’s candidacy was only decided in an emergency meeting on Tuesday.
Hulu Selangor MP P. Kamalanathan of MIC hit out at Pakatan for the latest political situation.
“They are willing to spend millions of ringgit of the people’s money on a needless by-election caused by their own internal political strife,” he said.
Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan said PKR is wasting tax money to sort out their internal problems.
PKR deputy president and Selangor party chief Azmin Ali said he will meet the Selangor PAS and DAP leadership to explain the decision behind the sudden resignation of Kajang assemblyman Lee Chin Cheh.
He also said the state seat would be contested by PKR to ensure that Pakatan rules the state.
Azmin said having Anwar in the Selangor legislative assembly would give a positive impact to Pakatan and Selangor.
He said he had called Selangor PAS chief Iskandar Abdul Samad and claimed that he had received a positive reaction from him.
Azmin said he had also contacted Pua and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng to inform the latest development on the issue.
