APA SALAHNYA HOMOSEXUAL MENJADI PERDANA MENTERI

APA SALAHNYA HOMOSEXUAL MENJADI PERDANA MENTERI

MAHARAJABLOGGER

Apa salahnya seorang homosexual menjadi Perdana Menteri?

What is reform to Umno?

What is reform to Umno?

By Wan Hamidi Hamid, Political Editor

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 28 — Are Umno leaders on the same wavelength with the rest of the country over the issue of reform?

Among the many definitions of reform is to "make changes for improvement in order to remove abuse and injustices". This is what the opposition Pakatan Rakyat is propagating and this is also the call by some Umno allies in the Barisan Nasional.

However, from the top to the bottom of the Umno hierarchy, the cry of reform simply means to get rid of president Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and to strengthen the Ketuanan Melayu (Malay supremacy) agenda. No one is really serious about removing "abuse and injustices".

Although not many dare ask the Prime Minister to resign, those who do believe it can resolve the party's woes after the March 8 general election debacle. For them, without Abdullah, the party can move on with its Ketuanan Melayu agenda.

The problem with this is, with or without Abdullah, Umno top leaders must continue to promote the racial supremacy agenda, much to chagrin of BN component parties who believe that was the main reason for the massive losses in this year's elections.

Whether Abdulah's deputy Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak or vice-president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, or even an outside challenger such as Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah is the one to lead Umno, the problem remains the same.

With Parti Keadilan Rakyat de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's return to Parliament today, riding on a Ketuanan Rakyat (supremacy of the people) platform and a rejection of race politics, his popularity among the non-Malays — representing 40 per cent of the population — is on the rise.

Many of those who disliked Anwar in the past, especially when he was the deputy to then Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, have begun to evaluate his new political offerings. While the majority of the non-Malays are already getting closer to giving him their full support, the Malays too are beginning to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Initially many political pundits saw the support for the opposition in terms of a protest vote against BN. It was true for the March 8 political tsunami. It was to teach the "arrogant" BN leaders a lesson, some argued.

Almost six months later, even those loyal BN supporters who regretted voting for either PKR, Pas or DAP on March 8 have absolved themselves of such a sin. They see the Umno and BN leaders, although not all, have not learnt their lesson — they are still arrogant, uncouth and corruptible.

Now MCA and Gerakan leaders are allowing members to think aloud, saying that Umno must get rid of parochial race politics if it wants to continue cooperating with them. The two Chinese-dominated parties are being pressured by grassroots members who have seen that despite ideological differences, Pakatan Rakyat is based on equal partnership. BN component members are unhappy with the master-servant relationship, as described by some of their senior leaders.

But Umno is already trapped in its Ketuanan Melayu game.

Abdullah has tried to explain what it means — the Malays must strengthen themselves to be successful and developed, and it is not to dominate, rule over and force their power upon other races.

Unfortunately for the Umno president, his definition is not the one accepted by many top and low level leaders whose understanding is that Malay supremacy means the masters of the land, and no one should challenge, let alone question it.

The racial agenda has been translated into many forms of intimidation — at least in the eyes of the non-Malays and even some liberal Malays — such as threatening to take stern action against those who question Malay privileges and demanding the government provide more aid and assistance to the Malays at the expense of the multiracial taxpayers.

At the current meetings of Umno branches nationwide, despite a few calls for the Prime Minister to resign and for the party to abolish the quota nomination system for party polls, the Ketuanan Melayu bit has become a compulsory war cry.

At branch-level meetings, some are just race-baiting — the non-Malays will take over the country if the government stops giving the Malays more power, jobs, business and education opportunities and other perks.

The question is — if they take over the Umno leadership, can Najib, Muhyiddin or Tengku Razaleigh reform Umno to suit with the needs of all Malaysians? Or will the racial supremacy continue to reign to the detriment of Malaysia's multiracial society?

The Federal Constitution's provision for the Malays is to help the underprivileged and bring the Malays out of poverty. To promote racial supremacy and segregation is not constitutional.

This is the problem Umno leaders must resolve if they truly want a Bangsa Malaysia, as espoused by one of their great leaders, Dr Mahathir, despite the veteran politician's racist remarks.

In his own words 15 years ago Dr Mahathir said: "The establishment of a fully united Malaysian nation with a sense of common and shared destiny, a nation that is at peace with itself, territorially and ethnically integrated, living in harmony and in full and fair partnership, made up of one Bangsa Malaysia (one Malaysian nation) with political loyalty and dedication to the nation."

It's up to Umno leaders now if they really want to achieve the former premier's dream of Vision 2020, and that's just 12 years from now, or continue to talk racial politics.

kzso - get rid of kj, kamaluddin, kalimullah, 4th floor, hp6 ministers and supreme council members. then pl to get tun dr mahathir, ku li and other umno veterans to sit down and discuss the way forward. that's all.

Umno dissidents want change in leadership

Umno dissidents want change in leadership

KOTA BARU: Certain dissidents in Umno are calling for a leadership change in the party following the Permatang Pauh by-election defeat while others are claiming that Barisan Nasional was ill-prepared to take on Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Veteran politician Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah has called for a renewal of leadership in Umno following Barisan Nasional’s loss in the pulsating Permatang Pauh parliamentary by-election.

In a statement, he said the result was proof that the wave of change gripping the country could not be discounted and so Umno must change to adapt in a world growing more complex by the day.

“The people of Malaysia demand leadership that can be trusted to unite us, to restore confidence in our institutions, and to forge a clear national direction.

In Kuala Terengganu, Mentri Besar Datuk Ahmad Said said the Barisan election machinery had failed to do its “homework” and was unprepared for the by-election.

“I observed how the BN election workers functioned during my campaigning period and felt that they were weak in convincing the voters,” he said after chairing the weekly state exco meeting yesterday.

Ahmad said the “K5” system should have been used for the by-election. Under this system, each Barisan election worker must convince five voters to vote for Barisan.

“However, this was not the case and I was shocked to see in-fighting among Umno members who were interested in vying for party posts during the crucial period,” he said.

In Muar, several Umno branch leaders represented by Datuk Kadar Shah Tun Sulaiman Ninam Shah said Umno leaders should realise by now that the Malays, including those in Permatang Pauh, had lost confidence in Umno's leadership.

He said they should accept the fact that they needed to adopt a more realistic approach if they wanted to regain the confidence of the Malays.

He said that one major reason for Barisan's loss was the swearing on the Quran by both Saiful Bukhari Azlan and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

He said Umno leaders should not allow the use of the Quran to resolve personal matters or to prove one's innocence. “We are sad that the Quran has been used as a means to resolve personal and political matters.

In Kuala Lumpur, Umno Youth exco member Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir, who is also Jerlun MP, said changes in Umno's top leadership should take place now.

“We have a credibility problem now due to the weak leadership. If we still continue with our good old ways, we will be defeated again,” he said.

kzso - will umno leaderships listen and take note on this?

Dr Mahathir fires a salvo at Anwar

Dr Mahathir fires a salvo at Anwar

PUTRAJAYA: Just a day after Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim won the Permatang Pauh Parliamentary seat, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad fired his first salvo at him by claiming the PKR adviser could “convince even the devil to follow him”.

Dr Mahathir predicted that once back in Parliament, Anwar would make “life very difficult” for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
Reaching out: Dr Mahathir and his wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Ali entertaining a youth group from the Presbyterian Church of seven countries at the Perdana Leadership Foundation in Putrajaya yesterday.

“I don’t think Abdullah is a match for Anwar. He is going to raise all kinds of issues and questions and will demand and pressure the Prime Minister for answers. It is going to be a tough time for Barisan,” he said.

Dr Mahathir, however, felt that Anwar would not get 30 MPs to switch sides to form the government. He said the PKR adviser might think he could “buy” the MPs but it would be impossible for him to “outbid the other bidders who have more money.”

“The Permatang Pauh by-election results is a clear message for Barisan Nasional, Umno and its leaders. Within five months after the March 8 polls, Barisan lost the seat again, with a bigger majority than the last time.

“I believe this will be the trend at other places as well,” he said when met at his office yesterday.

He said Abdullah, his deputy Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and other leaders should not close their “ears and eyes” to the people’s message and should not blame the Permatang Pauh defeat on sabotage or other elements.

“If changes are made two years from now, then Umno will face an uphill task to gain strength and the people’s confidence. If they fail to change, then Barisan can expect defeat in the 13th general election,” he said, adding he was willing to come back to the party if Abdullah stepped down before the scheduled handover to Najib in 2010.

He said Umno should be concerned that the party was losing popularity and appeal and even the DAP had become more appealing to the Malays, referring to former Transparency International Malaysia chairman Tunku Aziz Tunku Ibrahim joining the DAP.

kzso - bn and umno changes must be made NOW rather than 2010 which is too late already.

Analysis #1 on Permatang Pauh by-election

Analysis on Permatang Pauh by-election:

August 2008:

Anwar : 31,195 votes
Azizah : 30,338
difference : +857

Ariff : 15,524
Firdaus : 16,950
Difference : -1,426

Spoilt votes : 447

then the increased of votes for anwar is only : 857-447 = 410

turnout
ge : 82.06% from 58,449 : 47,376
by-e : 81.01% from 58,449 : 47,963
difference : -587

let's say the one who did not turn-up and vote are 'protest voters' from umno/bn;
then anwar's increased/additional votes is lower i.e -177 (410-587)

then who says that anwar has increased his majority in this permatang pauh? it's less actually but the fact is permatang pauh is anwar's fortress and stronghold.... that's why he dares to say that if he put in his songkok and kain pelkat, he'll sure win. with the current sentiment of current economic situation, pl's leadership which is actually under the influence of kj, kamaluddin, kalimullah, 4th floor; any tom, dick and harry will win any by-election.

kzso - let's see how anwar perform in parliament as the pakatan leader. now people can see his true colors....

Anwar ' menang besar ' hanya dengan 857 undi baru

Anwar ' menang besar ' hanya dengan 857 undi baru

Penasihat Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim mengesahkan tempatnya di Dewan Rakyat apabila memangi pilihan raya kecil Permatang Pauh dengan majoriti 15,671 undi.

Anwar memperolehi memperolehi 31,195 undi menewaskan dua calon lain iaitu Datuk Arif Shah Omar Shah calon Barisan Nasional (BN) memperolehi 15,524 undi dan calon AKIM, Hanafi Hamad pula hanya memperolehi 92 undi.

kzso - the fact is permatang pauh is anwar's stronghold and fortress. nevertheless, it also shows that rakyat are giving signal that we are suffering and also pl needs to sack and kick his son-in-law+kamaluddin+kalimullah+4th floor and hp6 supreme council members and ministers!

Renewed opportunism in Umno

Renewed opportunism in Umno

AUG 27 — It's is hardly surprising that Umno leadership pretenders, Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah and Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir, have renewed calls for Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's resignation as premier after Barisan Nasional's comprehensive defeat in the Permatang Pauh by-election.

The pressure for Abdullah to step down started right after BN's disastrous performance in the general election but quietened soon after the prime minister and his deputy Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced a transition plan which would see the latter taking over both the administration and party sometime in the middle of 2010.

Although not unanimously accepted by Umno rank and file, it was enough to buy Abdullah some time to build his legacy and give Najib a chance to resuscitate a tattered public image courtesy of his top advisor's involvement in the gruesome Altantuya murder.

The transition plan scuppered plans by Abdullah's detractors in the party to oust him during Umno's general assembly in December. Most notably, Abdullah chief critic from within his own cabinet, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, was forced to back down from contesting one of the two top posts in Umno to defending his third-tier vice presidency.

Many felt Muhyiddin was forced to retreat because with Abdullah and Najib circling the wagon with the transition plan, there was little support among party leaders and warlords for him to move up the party hierarchy.

Similarly, Tengku Razaleigh's campaign to once again become the president of Umno was losing its momentum. Privately his advisers admitted to fighting a losing battle and the transition plan was as good as a nail in his political coffin.

For Mukhriz, his political career's high point of replicating his father's act of dissent by writing a letter demanding the prime minister's resignation lost any traction it may have generated with the 2010 plan and his own hopes of becoming the next party youth leader were also diminishing with a strong surge of popularity of former Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohd Khir Toyo among grassroots youth members.

So for these Abdullah critics, the result of the Permatang Pauh by-election is another opportunity for them to generate momentum against the prime minister.

They claim that Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's victory is confirmation of the rakyat's rejection and repudiation of Abdullah's leadership. The result is a signal that nothing has been done to salvage the situation since the general election and BN needs a new leader before it becomes too late.

Such calls are at best opportunistic. First of all, this was not an election that was winnable for BN. It took place in Anwar's "back yard" and is a seat that has been in the Anwar family for the last seven terms.

From the get go, many in Umno had already conceded defeat and this was reflected in the reality that at times during the campaign it appeared as though Najib was the only Umno leader working the ground.

While admittedly the prime minister's public approval ratings have been sliding, they are still as strong as Anwar's and Najib's. The by-election was fought under very difficult localised circumstances for BN and to use the results to hasten Abdullah's departure would be opportunistic as well as missing the point of the defeat.

Secondly, the by-election was, if anything, framed as a referendum between Anwar and Najib. Again, although this is unfair because it was held in Anwar's stronghold, many sized up both "prime ministers-in-waiting" during the campaign.

Anwar was as relentless in his attacks on Najib and vice versa. The deputy prime minister believed at one point his own credibility was at stake and swore in a mosque that he never met Altantuya or had anything to do in her murder.

If anything, Najib is as damaged as Abdullah after this by-election campaign which means whenever a leadership does transition takes place, it will do little to save the fate of Umno and BN.

To be fair, Tengku Razaleigh understood this and launched his latest salvo against the top two leaders. Mukhriz, on the other hand, was more disingenuous refusing to criticise Najib for tactical reasons relating to his own future career and limiting his attacks to his father's arch enemy, Abdullah.

Thirdly, Umno and BN must understand that this is not the time to mess about with pressure on the leadership. With Anwar's threat of Sept 16 looming, Umno and BN need to hunker down, close ranks and train their guns outwards.

They are already going to be in for a rough ride with Anwar as the parliamentary opposition leader, they cannot afford to waste their time and energy attacking their own leadership especially after a transition plan between Abdullah and Najib was put in place very recently.

Lastly, the calls for the prime minister to step down again demonstrates Umno's ignorance of the real causes for their plunging popularity. It is not Abdullah per se that the rakyat are rejecting but the system that Umno is seen to propagate.

The refusal to reform, the denial of corruption and the inability to appear magnanimous to non-Malay interests continue to characterise Umno. This is what the rakyat is against and they punished Abdullah for it in the general election because he let them down by not moving firmly enough with his reform agenda.

Umno needs to understand that the by-election result was largely due to Anwar and his personal connection with the voters of Permatang Pauh. While there may be many national factors, these alone do not explain Anwar's resounding win.

He is "family" to the people of Permatang Pauh - a favourite son that they believe will be prime minister. To take the result and turn it against Abdullah smacks of sheer opportunism and denial of the root causes for Umno’s and BN's continued decline into obscurity.

kzso - ppl know that anwar will win because it's his fortress and stronghold; that's why he goes for permatang pauh rather than bukit bintang and kulim seat; but the rakyat also want to tell pl that we do not want him, kj, kamaluddin, kalimullah, 4th floor and hp6 ministers + supreme council to helmthe country anymore and wake up! rakyat are suffering....

Don't View Anwar's Victory Lightly, Says Muhyiddin

Don't View Anwar's Victory Lightly, Says Muhyiddin

SINGAPORE, Aug 27 (Bernama) -- Barisan Nasional (BN) should not take lightly the victory of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) advisor Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in the Permatang Pauh parliamentary by-election, said Umno Vice-President Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

Muhyiddin said he was concerned that the voters' decision to give victory to the opposition would become a trend. "Although it was just a by-election, it could be an indication of a trend that the voters had already decided that they wanted change even if they didn't know what the changes were, and refused to accept BN's leadership," he told Malaysian journalists here.
Muhyiddin, who is International Trade and Industry Minister, was here to attend the Asean Economic Ministers Meeting.

He said BN and Umno should conduct a post-mortem and take steps to speed up Umno's reinventing process as well as measures to rebrand the BN with new approach more acceptable to the people.

According to him, this would require the BN and Umno to re-evaluate whether their approach to campaign was already "stale and no longer acceptable to the people."

"It is clear that we need to make swift changes to the organisation and to the way we do things," he said.

Muhyiddin added that the results also showed that the voters' mindset had shifted and that they now wanted something which "are fairer, not racial-based (politics) but one that is based on the profile of the multiracial and multi-religious Malaysians." "Umno should be prepared to make the change," he said.

Muhyiddin said, however, that Anwar's victory was something to be expected and accepted as it was the wishes of the people, who made their choice under a democratic process.

"It may be that whatever is said about Anwar, the people and voters just refuse to believe it.
"The explanation given by our leaders was not accepted as though it was already decided from the outset that the BN would lose and PKR would win," he said.

Meanwhile, MCA Secretary-General Datuk Seri Ong Ka Chuan said all parties should accept Anwar's victory as it was the wishes of the people.

"We must respect the voters' decision and the country's democratic practices.

"Irrespective of the BN's view, we must accept the people's decision," he told reporters in Genting Highlands after opening the 30th anniversary of the National Association of Malaysian Life Insurance and Financial Advisor.

Anwar won the by-election with a 15,671-vote majority after securing 31,195 votes, defeating BN candidate Datuk Arif Shah Omar Shah, who obtained 15,524 votes.

Angkatan Keadilan Insan Malaysia candidate, Hanafi Mamat, lost his deposit after obtaining only 92 votes. There were 447 spoilt votes.

Don't Misinterpret Permatang Pauh By-election's Result, Says Abdullah

JOHOR BAHARU, Aug 27 (Bernama) -- The result of the Permatang Pauh by-election, which was won by Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) advisor Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, cannot be interpreted as a trend that can happen in other constituencies, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said Wednesday.

The prime minister said the Barisan Nasional (BN) which won 140 parliamentary seats in the March 8 general election still commanded strong support from the people.

"What happened in Permatang Pauh was not something so big as to change the situation that exists after the last general election.

"The Permatang Pauh by-election is one by-election that cannot be interpreted as something that can happen in other constituencies. I believe we can still continue the government,"

Abdullah, who is also BN chairman, told reporters after sending off Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah at the Senai Airport here Wednesday.

Anwar Ibrahim won the Permatang Pauh by-election Tuesday with a 15,671-vote majority, garnering 31,195 votes against the BN's Datuk Arif Shah Omar Shah, 51, who obtained 15,524 votes.

The other candidate, Hanafi Mamat, 61, of Angkatan Keadilan Insan Malaysia (Akim) lost his deposit as he only received 92 votes.

kzso - pl, please wake up from your sleeplah and sweet dream; look what's happening around you ;the people are suffering and anwar/dap and pas is taking the opportunity. don't wait until 1511 happens again! at least there is still hope in umno when they still have leaders like muhyiddin. is pl still sleeping when he says don't worry it will not be a trend and not an indication; pl, for once pls do not listen to kj, kamaluddin, kalimullah and your hp6 supreme council and ministers

Umno Leaders Call Abdullah To Quit After Shameful Defeat

Umno Leaders Call Abdullah To Quit After Shameful Defeat

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) - -

Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi faced calls to quit from within his ruling party Wednesday after opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim scored a landslide by-election victory.

Anwar won the vote to return to parliament despite an intense campaign mounted by the Barisan Nasional coalition, which he has promised to unseat within a month with the help of defecting lawmakers.

The failure to check Anwar has heaped more pressure on Abdullah, who has fought to hold on to his job since March general elections in which the opposition gained unprecedented ground.

Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, a senior member of the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) which leads the ruling coalition, called for a new leadership "to unite our people... and forge a clear national direction."

"(Abdullah) does not have the minimal credibility needed to run the country day by day, let alone to take it in the new directions we need to go in a complex world," he said.

"This dangerous situation cannot continue."

Razaleigh said the coalition's by-election campaign, which was criticised for its racial overtones and focus on sodomy allegations against Anwar, has "embarrassed and divided the nation with its ugliness."

"It is time to face the music: it is we who have been buried," he said.

Razaleigh plans to challenge Abdullah for the party leadership in December polls, but is likely to fail after the premier silenced calls for his immediate ouster by agreeing to hand over power to his deputy Najib Razak in 2010.

Abdullah's main critic, former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad, has also called for the resignation of his successor after relations between the two soured in 2006.

Mahathir's son Mukhriz, another senior UMNO figure who is vying for the top spot in the party's influential youth wing, also called for Abdullah's immediate resignation."I think Abdullah should strongly consider for all our sakes, to step down now," he told AFP."This is a second time that the Malaysian people have given a clear message, with the first at the general elections. It is a rejection of the present leader and he must leave now."

wake up umno members

kzso - will pl listen to this call? quite doubtful because he'll only listen to kj, kamaluddin and kalimullah and there will be "yes sir" and hp6 type of ministers backing him up and the people who call it will be bashed upside down.... now it's up to umno members to give 'clear signal' taht they do not want him, kj, kamaluddin, kalimullah, hp6 ministers and supreme council members

Dr M: Malaysia lacks good decision-making

Dr M: Malaysia lacks good decision-making

KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 26,2008) :

Malaysia is lacking in good decision-making because it fails to anticipate the problems of the future.

Former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said to achieve Vision 2020, "we must anticipate the problems we may face in the future and be ready to make decisions to counter them".
Dr Mahathir, who introduced Vision 2020 to Malaysia, said the world is going through price hikes in fuel, food, aluminium and steel and Malaysia now needs to be able to handle the high-cost situation.

"Our people are used to very low cost of living, services and food and they are not prepared to face a high cost of living. I think we need to learn from countries with a high cost of living -- how do they survive, how do they prosper and how to be competitive," he said, at the Futurist forum 2008 entitled "Mindset: A framework to anticipate the future" today.

"If we do not do that, then I think we cannot achieve Vision 2020."

Addressing questions from participants on Malaysia's incompetency, Dr Mahathir said: "Malaysia is the most planned country in the world. But people do not follow the plans prepared for them. If people had followed the plans, we would have been a developed country by now." He said every plan has to have an implementation strategy, without which the plan is useless.

"Fortunate for Malaysia, we do have an implementation unit and the Economic Planning Unit," he said.

Dr Mahathir said planning for people is much more difficult because people resent others telling them what to do or how to think.

"I have spent 22 years trying to change the mindset of the Malays, for example, and I must admit that I have failed in that, but people won't give any more time."

Among other issues, Dr Mahathir also said the education system had become very politicised. He said the people's mentality has not changed, they want different kinds of education system because they want to preserve their own languages, they want more emphasis in religious education and so on. He said the people like to blame politicians but the politicians are complying with the people's wishes.

Dr Mahathir also said national intergration is difficult to achieve because politicians are bringing out sensitive issues which create more division amongst the people. "People think for a multiracial country, we are doing rather well but even then we need to be extremely careful," he added.

kzso - in another word, we are lacking good leaders. what we have now is pl, kj, kamaluddin, kalimullah, hp6 supreme council/ministers and 4th floor manning this country. get rid of this jokers and hp6 supreme council and ministers!

Anwar's in, Pak Lah's out

Anwar's in, Pak Lah's out

AUG 27 — Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's stunning win at the Permatang Pauh by-election not only cemented his position as the undisputed leader of the opposition in Malaysia, it prompted senior Umno politicians to begin the countdown to Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's last day in office.

The majority view is that he has to go by the end of the year if Umno and BN are to stand any chance of checking the advance of Pakatan Rakyat and holding onto to power at the next general elections.

Tuesday night was a repeat of March 8 with Pakatan Rakyat giddy with an electoral success and BN politicians dizzy with another rejection by the public.

But the joy was sweeter for the opposition because their icon not only won but did so in style, trouncing BN's Arif Shah by a 15,671 majority, 2,000 more votes than what his wife obtained five months ago.

The pain was more severe for BN because unlike March 8, they were not caught blind-sided. They poured in millions of ringgit into the campaign, brought their heavy hitters, threw every conceivable missile at Anwar but still ended up losing badly.

The consequences of the Permatang Pauh by-election could be far-reaching, with even Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's neatly-packaged two-year transition of power under threat from increasingly disillusioned party members and leaders of coalition partners.

On Tuesday, only two hours after the last box of votes had been counted, senior Umno politicians were in deep discussion over the need for Abdullah to step down, believing that he had lost the ability to check a resurgent opposition.

A check of the voting pattern at 25 polling stations showed that Anwar snared a handy portion of Malays votes and the bulk of non-Malay votes.

Even the Siamese electorate – a traditional bank of BN support – gave their vote to Anwar.

Najib put on a brave face, saying that Anwar's victory proved that democracy was alive in Malaysia. Left unsaid was that the BN defeat showed that not much had changed on the ground since March 8. Despite the raft of promises by Abdullah to reform the system, the public was not moved.

If anything, Permatang Pauh confirmed that Chinese and Indians no longer fear giving their support to the Opposition.

It also confirmed that the umbilical cord between the Malaysian voter and the Barisan Nasional has been severed.

BN politicians have compiled a list of excuses for the heavy defeat, saying that Permatang Pauh has always been Anwar's fortress; that the campaign was pockmarked with allegations and innuendoes and that the electorate was in no mood to support the establishment because of the rising cost of living.

But they all sounded like excuses and could not obscure the fact that BN suffered its heaviest by-election defeat in recent memory.

Never has BN been in a deeper hole. Never has Abdullah Ahmad Badawi faced such a bleak picture.

kzso - umno leaderships wake up! do not wait until ge or 2 to 3 years before ge changes are made; it'll be too late already. get ku li/najib/muhyiddin to lead umno NOW. get rakyat's and umno solidarity and confidence back again! to najib, if you want to lead umno and the country you better take care and control of rosmah. she is and she will be your downfall.

PERMATANG PAUH

Posted by Dr. Mahathir Mohamad at August 27, 2008 1:20 PM

1. Apa yang telah dijangka sudah pun berlaku.

2. Anwar menang.

3. Barisan Nasional kalah.

4. Saya biasa menulis berkenaan dilema Melayu.

18. Nak tunggu sampai bila wahai ahli UMNO, sebelum kamu sedar akan perlunya kepimpinan Dato Seri Abdullah ditamatkan?

kzso - it's not PL that need to go but umno members MUST eliminate and throw out kj, kamaruddin, kalimullah and all other hp6 supreme council members. PL is ok but his problem is that he has around him wrong/selfish/self-centered advisors and trusted people around him. If PL and umno leaders do not want to listen in sacking and throwing out kj, kalimullah, kamaluddin out of malaysian politics, then only we'll throw him and all umno leaders out!

FT Mufti: Saiful's oath is valid

FT Mufti: Saiful's oath is valid
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 25 - Saiful Bukhari Azlan's oath is valid and does not contravene Islamic law according to Federal Territory Mufti Datuk Wan Zahidi Wan Teh.

"An oath is valid as long as he swears in the name of Allah and says a qasam alphabet -- waw, ba and ta -- by uttering Walahi, Wabillahi, Watawallahi," he told reporters in his office at the Federal Territories Islamic Affairs Department today.

He said this was so as there were two kinds of oaths; one in the course of proceedings in a Syariah court and another outside of a trial, adding that the latter could be performed freely if one chose to do so to make a general statement.

He did, however, note that while Saiful's oath had no relation to the one taken in a Syariah court, "it is up to the court if they want to use it as evidence."

He also commented on the sacred position of hukum (Islamic law) when expressing his doubts over the credibility of Ramlang Porigi, the imam who had overseen Saiful's oath and had yesterday said the oath was invalid due to technicalities.

"Whoever makes a decision on hukum without making reference to credible sources of knowledge has a place in hell ready for him. This is because what you say will guide the public. When you talk about hukum, you are signing off on it on behalf of Allah.

"Where is his reference? I was informed he is only a low-ranking officer. What are his qualifications? As an imam, he may not be qualified to speak on matters of law and I have doubts that he can read scripture," the mufti said, adding that Ramlang's comments may confuse Muslims.

Seeking to assert his authority on the matter, he added that this was why he had a book of scripture in front of him throughout the press conference.

"When I write, I make references to the scripture. I don't dare to speak just from my memory alone."

He also added that Ramlang attended the swearing as a matter of procedure at the mosque, not because Islamic law required witnesses or an imam to conduct it. However, he did concur with Ramlang that it was not a sumpah muhabalah as it required the agreement of both parties.

According to Wan Zahidi, hukum did not require issues such as time, place, the need for a witness, the swearing on a Quran or the subject matter of the oath as conditions for taking an oath that is not part of Syariah proceedings.

He added, however, that one could add weight when swearing by doing any of the following: after the Asar prayers on Friday, in a mosque by the pulpit, with a holy book or the reading of the 77th verse from Surah Aal Imran.

"And using just one qasam alphabet is sufficient but Saiful chose to say all three out of his own confidence."

On this point he insisted that the similarities to the Christian act of swearing on the Bible was a non-issue.

"Similarities cannot be assumed to be an act of copying. For example, Christians say Amen and Muslims say Amin when praying."

Wan Zahidi also said that any Muslim could take an oath at the mosque as it was meant to be utilised by Muslims but stopped short of saying that Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, whom Saiful accused of sodomy, should do likewise.

Instead, he said that the issue should not be politicised: "Religion is the domain of Allah and should not be used to forward any agenda but the truth."

kzso - for now the mufti of perlis, perak, ft have given their personal opinion. what about muftis from kedah, n. sembilan, johore, terengganu and kelantan? it's ok to get the personal opinion from muftis but it's much better to have an ijtima' ulama' so that the majlis fatwa can give a fatwa on this....

Imam"s bombshell to help PKR"s last-minute campaign

Imam"s bombshell to help PKR"s last-minute campaign

By Wan Hamidi Hamid

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 25 It"s an eleventh-hour advantage for Parti Keadilan Rakyat.

The imam who witnessed Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan"s swearing on the Quran to accuse Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim of sodomising him has cast doubts on the oath.

With less than a day to campaign in the Permatang Pauh by-election, observers noted that the Barisan Nasional"s strongest point of attack against the former deputy prime minister has been blunted.

This means the public confession by Ramlang Porigi, the imam of the Kuala Lumpur mosque, made in Permatang Pauh late last night has freed Anwar from having to take the same Quranic vow to prove his innocence.

Ramlang witnessed Saiful taking his oath on the eve of the Permatang Pauh by-election. Although Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has said it was not politically motivated, he has been demanding that Anwar take the same oath to deny any wrongdoing.

The PKR de facto leader has refused, and for that, he has been vilified by BN leaders as well as the mainstream media.

To put further pressure on Anwar, Najib, who is leading the BN campaign in the by-election, swore in a Permatang Pauh mosque that he had nothing to do with the murdered Mongolian woman Altantuya Shaariibuu.

On Anwar"s part, he and his campaigners have been insinuating that the Umno deputy president had somehow been involved in the murder linked to an alleged multibillion ringgit submarine deal.

But in front of thousands in Penanti last night, the imam, who said he did not arrange the ceremony on Aug 15, claimed he was directed by -a higher authority- to conduct the oath-taking ritual.

He added that the oath was not completely Islamic as both parties the accused and the accuser must attend. It was an ex-parte admission by Saiful.

When met by the press, Ramlang insisted that as a civil servant he is one of the nine official imams paid by the government to run the KL mosque he must obey the directives from his superiors.

Why did he have to be on a PKR ceramah platform to explain himself? Ramlang said he did not want to be blamed for conspiring with Umno, and the fact that no one in authority defended him.
He has been exposed as an Umno member registered as a voter in Penanti under the Permatang Pauh parliamentary constituency, which he later confirmed.

He even asked the voters of Permatang Pauh to stop blaming him for having to do what was directed by the top people, and for that he received thunderous applause and chants of "Allahu Akbar" (God is Great).

PKR vice-president Azmin Ali, who leads the party"s campaign in the by-election, has denied rewarding Ramlang who came forward willingly.

He told the press that it was proven that the second sodomy allegation is yet another Umno political conspiracy against his boss.

With less than 24 hours to go before polling, PKR and its allies especially Pas are expected to bombard the Malay-majority areas with this latest bombshell.

Many Malay voters are in doubt after Saiful"s oath despite repeated assurance from Pas religious scholars that it was a wrong way to take an oath.

Ramlang"s insinuation that Saiful was not all worried when taking his oath is expected to seen by many Malay voters as a signal that it was a false admission that"s what PKR campaigners are going to exploit today.

Anwar has refused to swear on the Quran despite calls by BN leaders, saying that many religious scholars advised him not to resort to it.

He has also referred the case to the Kuala Lumpur Islamic Religious Department, accusing Saiful of false accusation even as his Sodomy II charge is to be heard on Sept 10.

Anwar"s campaigners are striving to ensure their leader surpasses his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Ismail"s majority of 13,000-plus votes in the March 8 general election.

kzso - yep.. the imam is right. it's not a sumpah mubahalah. actually it's called "alyamin qhairul qadhaiyah". according to the mufti of federal territory "....sumpah Mohd Saiful juga adalah sah sebagai sumpah di luar perbicaraan atau "alyamin qhairul qadhaiyah" dan bukan sumpah "mubahalah" seperti yang disiarkan oleh media."Ini kerana "mubahalah" memerlukan persetujuan pihak kedua seperti yang dinyatakan dalam ayat 61 Surah Ali Imran,"

Demi politik....Anwar fitnah Najib amal agama Hindu

Demi politik....Anwar fitnah Najib amal agama Hindu

Demi politik tergamak Anwar fitnah Najib amal acara keagamaan Hindu…. Calon Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim hari Isnin membuat fitnah terbaru terhdap Timbalan Perdana Menteri, Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Tun Razak mengamalkan acara kegamaan Hindu.

Contributed by mulutmelayu

Pegang Al-Quran semasa bersumpah?

*********

kzso - will anwar dare to sue ezam too?

Isu budak pembancuh kopi hangat di Permatang Pauh

1. Saiful Bukhari Azlan, budak pembancuh kopi Anwar akhirnya tetap menjadi perhatian di Permatang Pauh. Sepatutnya isu ini mudah ditepis dengan kepakaran pidato Anwar, namun rupa-rupanya isu itu masih menghantui Anwar, walaupun dua hari lagi hari mengundi.

Setelah didakwa, beliau menukar pertuduhan mengatakan konspirasi pejabat Pak Lah pula.

5. Barangkali selepas dijatuhkan hukuman, siapa pula yang menjadi mangsa Anwar?. Kenapa beliau sering berubah-ubah tuduhan ?

Sumpah budak pembancuh kopi Anwar

Sendiri buat, sendiri tanggung!

Esok bentuk kerajaan, turun harga minyak ?

1. Kempen Anwar seperti biasa laungkan slogan 'esok bentuk kerajaan, turunkan harga mintyak!. Maksudnya 'esok kalau saya jadi PM, saya akan turunkan harga minyak!

Noktah!

4. Diandaikan Anwar berjaya bentuk kerajaan, dan diandaikan juga berjaya jadi PM, adakah Anwar mampu menurunkan harga minyak? Walaupun andaian ini seperti bunyi Mat Jenin, tetapi kita bayangkan mungkin 'angan-angan' Mat Jenin jadi kenyataan.

8. Bagaimana dengan saudagar Islam di Timur Tengah ?. Anwar pernah sebut dahulu bahawa yayasannya Foundation For The Future tiada kaitan dengan Amerika Syarikat, tetapi apabila terbongkar di website Jabatan Negara Amerika, bahawa yayasan yang dipengerusikan Anwar itu merupakan boneka Amerika, Anwar tidak dapat menyorok lalu, lalu pilih senjata terakhir iaitu letak jawatan!

Itulah maksudnya KETUANAN RAKYAT!

Permatang Pauh bakal mengundi sekali lagi ?

Bermakna kerusi Permatang Pauh sekali lagi terpaksa dikosongkan!

Kes liwat Anwar 1998 : Dari kiri Anwar, Azizan Abu Bakar (bekas pemandu) dan Sukma Darmawan (adik angkat). Semuanya sekitar orang terdekat Anwar. Kini didakwa pula dengan budak pembancuh kopi Anwar.

7. Akhir kata kepada semua pengundi Permatang Pauh. Selamat mengundi, buatlah keputusan secara bijaksana.AIDC25 Ogos 2008

Swearing By The Quran Strikes Fear Among Malays

Swearing By The Quran Strikes Fear Among Malays

PENANG, Aug 24 (Bernama) --

The Malays only fear two things in life - swearing by the Quran in the name of Allah and the consumption of pork.

"If you are not scared then swear by the Quran" or "I am willing to swear by the Quran" are phrases often uttered by Malays when challenging another to prove his innocence.

Normally, those challenged to swear will not dare take it up for fear of retribution by Allah.

When was the last time we heard or had seen the Malays swear "Wallahi, Wabillahi, Watallahi" at an official ceremony to prove an accusation?

More significantly, a "sumpah laknat" (mubahalah), or swearing in the face of divine retribution.

This is the character of the Malay Muslims, something unique compared to Muslims from other regions including those in the Malay archipelago.

As such, it rarely happened except once in the 1960s when the late PAS president and Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Asri Muda and Tunku Abdul Rahman swore by the Quran over an accusation made by the late premier.

Umno veteran and Penang Malay Association president Datuk Mohd Yusof Latiff said Tunku had accused Asri of receiving foreign funding to topple the government.
"Asri denied the accusation and challenged Tunku to swear in a mosque to prove that he was telling the truth.

"The Tunku accepted the challenge and swore in the Masjid Zahir, Alor Star witnessed by PAS representative the late Yusof Rawa.

Asri denied the accusation by swearing in Kota Baharu mosque witnessed by Umno representative Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.

In this context and socio-cultural background, the swearing by Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, 23, at the Federal Territory Mosque in Kuala Lumpur on Aug 15 is seen by Malays as a serious matter since he was bold enough to prove his accusation.

Certain quarters particularly Anwar supporters may claim that the swearing by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's former aide was politically motivated aimed at reducing his chances of winning the Permatang Pauh by-election.

Saiful said it was not politically motivated and that by swearing by the Quran he wanted to prove he was telling the truth.

Anwar, the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) adviser is being challenged by Datuk Arif Shah Omar Shah of Barisan Nasional (BN) and Hanafi Mamat of Angkatan Keadilan Insan Malaysia (AKIM).

On Friday, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak was shown on television swearing in the name of Allah in the Guar Perahu mosque, Permatang Pauh denying that he and his wife were involved in the murder of Mongolian Altantuya Shariibu.

Islamic Scholars Defend Validity Of Swearing By Saiful

BUKIT MERTAJAM, Aug 24 (Bernama) --

Former National Fatwa Council chairman Datuk Dr Ismail Ibrahim said swearing in the name of Allah while holding the Quran to state truth should not be equated with the Christian way of swearing on the Bible.

He said in Islam, what was important was for the person to swear on his belief, and holding the Quran or not while doing so did not involve the question of his faith in Islam.

Therefore, Ismail said, the swearing in the mosque by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's former aide, Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, had fulfilled the condition on swearing in the Islamic way between a servant of God and his Creator.

"The swearing is between him (Mohd Saiful) and Allah. If he had done it with sincerity, others should not dispute it," he said when contacted for his comments on the polemics among ulamas on the swearing on the Quran by Mohd Saiful that he was sodomised by Anwar.

Ismail said Mohd Saiful had met the condition by saying in his oath, "Wallahi, Wabillahi, Watallahi", so the question of its validity did not arise at all.
He said whether Mohd Saiful held the Quran or not when taking the oath was not an issue and so should not be disputed.

"If we eat using fork and spoon like the Christians do, it does not make us Christians. Whatever we do depends on our intention."

He said as Malaysia practised civil law, the alleged sodomy case involving Mohd Saiful and Anwar would proceed in accordance with this law.

Ismail said it was not unusual for ulamas to have differing opinions on religious matters.

Meanwhile, Perlis Mufti Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin has come out in defence of his stand that the "sumpah mubahalah" (swearing in the name of God) needed not necessarily be made in the syariah court.

He said the ulamas' different views on the "sumpah laknat" (swearing in the face of divine retribution) by Mohd Saiful had resulted in public confusion, with some quarters manipulating the issue.

"Some are of the opinion that the swearing must be done in the syariah court and that truth be proven by calling four witnesses," he said.

The alleged sodomy case involving Anwar has been a hot issue during campaigning in the Permatang Pauh by-election, with a pamphlet carrying the different views of ulamas on Mohd Saiful's "sumpah mubahalah", being circulated in the constituency.

The pamphlet also carries the view of Cordoba University president Prof Dr Taha Al Jabir Al-Alwani which supports that the case be referred under the syariah provision of "qazaf" (slander).

A lecturer with Universiti Sains Malaysia's Department of Islamic Studies, Assoc Prof Dr Mohamad Radzi Othman, meanwhile, said the question of whether the "sumpah mubahalah" was made in the mosque or outside should not arise.

"In mubahalah, the intention is to make a statement and the place where it is made is not an issue."

On Mohd Saiful holding the Quran when swearing in the name of God, Mohamad Radzi said it was also not wrong as it was not a required condition.

"Maybe he was under duress and needed to hold the Quran to derive strength. So, it was not wrong and should not be disputed. He only wanted people to accept what he swore."

Asked whether sodomy cases should be tried under the law on "zina" (illicit sex), he said in the case of "zina", a person who accused another of committing the offence would require four witnesses.

"But in the case of sodomy, the ulamas have differing opinions. Some say it's not the same, so bringing four witnesses to prove the allegation is not a prerequisite."

On PAS' deputy spiritual leader Datuk Dr Haron Din that Mohd Saiful's sodomy case was a case of Li'An, he said this was only applicable to a married couple.

He suggested that ulamas or scholars explain the religious rulings clearly on the matter to avoid confusing the public.

kzso - again, will the majlis ulama' come out with a fatwa on this. do not let the ummah split becaus of this issue
