Why S’pore Times picked on Umno and not on DAP?

The Straits Times published an editorial headlined ‘Need for cool heads in Malaysia’ which was reproduced in the Jakarta Post.

The ST editorial touched on “the hardening of positions over the ‘Allah’ issue” in “these religiously fraught times”.

Commenting on the recent attack on a church in Penang and the vandalising of a Christian cemetery in Kuantan, the Singapore paper said the incidents “show how sentiment can turn irrational”.

It fears that Malaysia is looking at “a troubling lurch towards intolerance” and recommends that Anwar Ibrahim’s “evaluation that tensions have reached a ‘dangerous crescendo’ should be heeded”.

It also urged the religious heads to restrain the emotion of their flock and put the onus on the Umno leadership to convince the Malay that Islam is not under threat.

For the government-owned and strictly controlled broadsheet ST to produce the editorial, the Singapore government must be concerned about developments in Malaysia. Likewise Jakarta too for the Jakarta Post to carry the piece.

It seems that Umno and Muslims are being blamed while DAP and the Christians are being let off the hook.

The evangelistas and their strong network in the media (The J-Star, online portals and the international aggregators (Yahoo! News, Google News, MSN News) have recorded a most laudable success in playing the victimhood game.
